CharBar No. 7: A South Charlotte Neighborhood Staple

Drive down Carmel Road toward Montibello and you'll pass it without much fanfare — a shopping center spot, patio out front, string lights, a crowd that looks like it's been coming back for years. That's CharBar No. 7. It's still doing exactly what it set out to do: give South Charlotte a place to grab a burger, a beer, and a booth without any pretense attached.

A Little History

CharBar No. 7 opened in 2011, the brainchild of Tom Hager, whose family also owns Hickory Tavern. The idea started small — Hager wanted to recreate a bar he used to frequent during his college days in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He brought on Gregg Bibik, a Johnson & Wales grad and former Macaroni Grill manager, to run the kitchen, and the two of them quickly realized a seven-item menu wasn't going to cut it. So they built out from there: steaks, burgers, wings, and enough creative range to keep Bibik interested and regulars coming back.

As for the name, Hager has said himself that the reasoning is about as good as anyone's guess. They now have six CharBars and hope for more, so "No. 7" was less a location number and more an aspiration. That kind of self-aware humor tells you something about the place before you even walk in.

The original Carmel Road location was carved out of a strip mall space that used to belong to Hager's family's other restaurant company, and the neighborhood feel took to it immediately. From there it grew — Matthews, Mint Hill, Greensboro, Asheville, Southern Pines, even a location up in Mountain Brook, Alabama. But the Carmel Road spot is still the original, and it still carries that "come for a drink, stay a while" attitude the whole brand was built on.

Our Visit

Beth and I have been to CharBar many times over the years. It's the closest sit-down restaurant to our house, and if you live in the area, chances are you've said the same thing to a neighbor at some point — "let's just go to CharBar." That's not a knock. That's the whole reason the place works. You don't drive across town for it. You end up there on a Tuesday because it's easy, it's good, and it's five minutes away.

What We Ordered

My order depends on whether or not I'm wanting something healthy. If not, then it's always the Carolina Burger that comes with CB 7 chili, southern slaw, mustard, cheese, and onion. What sets CharBar apart on the burger front is something a lot of restaurants get wrong — they actually cook it to the temperature you ask for. Medium rare means medium rare. That shouldn't be rare. And the burgers themselves are thick, not the flattened, griddled kind you get at half the places in town.

Skip the fries. Order the homemade chips instead. They're not your standard potato chip — thicker, softer — and they're built for dipping in ranch.

On the healthier side, we rotate between the Grilled Salmon Salad, the Sesame Tuna Bowl, and the Super Grain Bowl, to which we add salmon. CharBar gets credit for having real options in that lane — a lot of burger-and-beer spots treat a side salad as an afterthought, and this isn't that. There are many to choose from.

I have one complaint. CharBar carries exactly one non-alcoholic beer, and it's an IPA. Not everyone likes IPAs, and with how many people are choosing an alcohol-free lifestyle these days. I'm surprised a restaurant this popular hasn't added two or three more NA options. That's an easy fix and a missed opportunity.

Vibe & Atmosphere

The vibe is super casual, but it's a step above what you'd expect walking into a chain serving similar fare. That's the balance CharBar hits well — you're not dressing up, you're not making a reservation three weeks out, but it also doesn't feel like you're settling. The patio is the draw when the weather's right, and inside there are enough TVs that you can watch a game without feeling like you're at a sports bar. It's a place you'd take your kids on a Tuesday and just as easily bring a couple over for a casual date night.

The Carmel Road Original

There's also a CharBar location out in Ballantyne, but the Carmel Road spot is the original — the one that started it all back in 2011 — and it's still the one Beth and I go to. It's ours, five minutes from the house, and it's earned its spot in the rotation the honest way: by being good, consistently, for over a decade.

Our Verdict

CharBar No. 7 is a great spot for a casual meal, plain and simple. It's also one of the better places in our area to watch a game — plenty of TVs inside, and enough covered outdoor seating that weather isn't much of an excuse to skip it. Order the Carolina Burger cooked exactly how you like it, get the homemade chips instead of the fries, and if you're in a lighter mood, the Salmon Salad or the Grain Bowl with salmon won't disappoint.
